When you add Waddell & Reed’s advisory products to your investment strategy, you gain access to an array of professional asset managers and investment options. From those, you and your advisor can work together to build a portfolio designed to meet your needs.
Just because a product is right for you now doesn’t mean it will be right for your situation in five years. By building in flexibility to our programs, some of our products are more customizable to your needs – such as saving for retirement or college, or building wealth. Your priorities are going to change over the years – your investments should reflect your changing life.
As the market moves, different asset classes will grow at different rates, which over time can push the makeup of your portfolio out of sync with your original investment goals. Rebalancing brings a portfolio back to its intended investment mix. In general, advisory products are rebalanced regularly – though the schedule depends on the product you select – in order to keep your portfolio aligned with your original investment goals.
Asset allocation helps manage volatility by combining asset classes such as stocks, bonds and cash in a portfolio. Ideally, asset allocation manages and maintains a proper level of risk weighed against desired returns. Your advisor will help determine which asset allocation model is best suited to your situation.
While asset allocation helps to ensure your portfolio is correctly positioned for your risk-return level, diversification is an additional step that spreads your investments across asset classes and – ideally – helps to lessen volatility in your portfolio. Effective diversification is most often achieved by including a mix of investments — such as small cap, large cap, international and fixed income — that tend to respond differently to economic influences.
Diversification, asset allocation and rebalancing are investment strategies that can help manage risk within your portfolio but they do not guarantee profits or protect against loss in declining markets. There may be tax implications with a rebalancing strategy in taxable accounts. Investors should consult with their tax advisor before implementing such a strategy. Waddell & Reed, Inc. does not provide tax advice.
Situations in your life can — and will — change, requiring you to make important decisions, including how you shape and reshape your long-term investment strategy. Talk to an advisor about our advisory programs and the benefits they may offer you.

Consider all factors. Please remember that an investment in a managed portfolio involves risk. The investment return and principal value of an investment will fluctuate, and shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. The portfolios’ risks are directly related to the risks of the underlying investments.
